Concoction: The Italian Soda

Prior to Master Joh's birthday, I have never heard of Italian soda. Have you? Pardon my ignorance if the whole world has known of this really cool drink. Now I actually feel like I belong somewhere among the elite. ;) Hah! This coming from somebody currently obsessed with Cali Ice and Tortillas. Eh.. I have no idea why.

Anyway, I have been going about thinking about that special drink for sometime now - considering that it is almost a month since I tasted it, and I have yet to ask Master Joh how they made that, or if it came from a bottle - but I don't think so, really. So I went about my usual gallivanting in cyberspace and thought to finally look up the recipe - if any - on how to make Italian soda.

Here is what I got. I just compiled it since most recipes direct you to do the same thing:

Ingredients:

  • 4 tbsp. syrup
  • 3/4 c. milk (some recipes do not include this)
  • Carbonated water
  • Crushed ice

Direction(s):
Mix the syrup and milk in a tall glass. Add carbonated water and ice until the glass is full. (Don't try mixing the ingredients in any other order or the milk will curdle.)

~~

Here is a video on how to make the Italian soda. The first part, before the lady pours in the cream is the Italian soda. After she pours the cream and the whipped cream, it becomes the Italian creamosa. :) More stuff learned today!

Productivity Hack: How to Keep a Sharp Focus at Work

When you live like me, you have to learn to juggle like me. And what is most important is to be able to learn to have something called "focus" in what you do.

These days, we have a lot of things that could be used to distract us: Internet, SMS (or texting), Friendster, Twitter, instant messaging, RSS feeds, and more. If you do not have any of these distractions, perhaps a little office gossip will take your mind off the more important things. And if you are a little web worker like yours truly, all the more distractions are bound to come your way, in the long run, you are pretty much at risk for losing your focus.

Focus is hard to come by these days. It is not something that you just turn on and off on a whim. Your surroundings are are essential if you want to be more focused. Here are some ways to help achieve a sharper focus as you toil the hours away:

  • Plan your day. It is important to list down the things that need to be done today. If you do not have a list to abide to, it is pretty easy to stray from your path and find yourself doing things that could have been done later. In the end, you may have not done what you were really supposed to do.
  • Find your down times. At work, most people have a "noisy" time where they somehow relax a bit or become a bit lazy when it comes to work. Find that time which you somewhat do not feel like doing anything and have your break then.
  • Set time limits. Everybody has a lot of things to do. So it is best that you set up certain amounts of time to finish or attend to a certain thing and make sure you try to finish what you set off to do for that allotted time. That way, that will be marked off the list of things to do.
  • Keep a journal or a diary of the things you did all through the day. The GiGC gave me a 3-year diary as a Christmas present last year (it's pink!), and it has been quite useful in helping me keep tracks on what I did on this particular day, or what happened on this day. Even my frustrations and thoughts go here.
  • Use programs to help track your time. Remember when I talked about RescueTime? Yes, that is it. If RescueTime does not help, then I also have an alternative way of keeping track of things to do, the ever helpful MS Excel.
  • Take more breaks. I know it sounds crazy, but the only thing that has kept me from having a burn-out is because in every hour, I take at least a couple of minutes off to cool my aching brain. It actually works. One really cannot help process tons of data in 8 straight hours. Have a break, have a KitKat.
  • Start the day right. In every single thing you do, it is best to remember that if you start the day right, you go through the day right. Even if there are numerous undesirable things that are bound to happen, if you start off right, eventually, it will end up right again.

These are but a few hacks to keep your focus. I know that it is one of the hardest to achieve. I should know, I think that aside from being a bit obsessive, I think I might also be a tad bit of attention deficit. ;)

Now, Focus!!

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
I do! Do you? You should, you know.. You could be one of those millionaires who the world does not know about, so you can still run around in your tattered shorts and rat-torn shirts and the who world would not pay attention to you as you do your own thing.

Well, okay, I really don't know about you, but thanks to my mom, I found "7 rules self-made millionaires live by" through Money Smarts. The lot goes something like this:

  • Treat money as something to save and invest. Translation: the minute you get your hands on some grub, think of ways on how you can put it away as savings.
  • Assume risks when you invest. Translation: no duh? If you don't go for the big ones, then you'll get your fair share of your little ones. Capisce?
  • A Simple Life. Translation: Do not spend water like money. If you have to live big, live big, but live simply. Ex. Millionaires live in stone mansions passed on for generations. They do not build houses after houses after houses (unless if they plan to branch into real estate).
  • A Goal is a Must. Translation: Make a specific goal, have timelines, have something to motivate you. If not, then you're just going round and round... soon enough you'll be creating crop circles.
  • Good debt vs Bad debt. Translation: As what my mom said, if you have to be in debt, it should be because it is for an investment.
  • Share the Love. Translation: Simple, really. Share your blessings. It is true, what they said about the more you give, the more you get back. Of course you should not count the things you've given out. Now that would be BAAADDD!
  • Train your Spawn to Handle Moolah. Translation: Set an example to your kids, teach them the value of money and how to take care of it. Not only are you setting them up for life, but you are also helping them to help you in the long run. Or something like that..

Good words. Wise words to live by. I revert back to an old post I had at the start of my blog: "May your money work for you." Let's try to be at least a bit rich, because as they say, "the rich get richer," while the rest of us go the other way.

Now tell me, do you want to be a millionaire?

Cheers!

Monday Hacks: Taking Care of Your Inbox
I use Gmail everyday. Perhaps the fastest way to get to me is through my email. Although I no longer keep it on or check it every few seconds (I used to check it frequently), it is still a part of my day.

One thing you will be able to notice if you look at my email is that my Inbox is almost always empty. No, it is not because nobody loves me and nobody sends me emails. On the contrary, I receive almost a hundred emails per day. Why? Simply because I my email address is like the core of my command center, with iGoogle as the whole enchilada. But that is a different story. Today, I share my secret of having an empty Inbox.

  1. Don't check your email every minute. I think most people would agree that your time is wasted hugely on the fact that you respond almost immediately as soon as something new comes in. If you've worked with email clients, such as Outlook or Thunderbird - like I do at home, then make sure the alert is turned off. It is best to check emails in intervals. To be honest, I check my emails hourly or every two hours.
  2. Apply filters. Gmail has this feature which allows you to automatically archive emails and put labels in them. Since my email serves as the command center, I have already set filters into my emails. That way, I can set time as to when I deal with emails that come for which ones. That way, I can easily focus my time into one set of emails - like those that are work related, forwarded, from my mother, from online opps.
  3. Take care of each email right away. I am not going back on #1, what I mean to say is that you take care of each email as soon as you've read it. Decide what you do with it: delete, archive, forward-archive, forward-delete, reply-archive, reply-delete.
  4. Is it important that you have to read it for information? If so, I recommend you Star it then Archive, or file it away to a folder/label called "Readables" then Archive it, as soon as you have dealt with it, remove the label and you're good. Or you could print it out and have it as a reading material when doing something outside cyberspace.
  5. Does the email contain things that you need to do in the future? Take note of the things and details and mark them down in your calendar, to-do list, or somewhere else. Archive email after taking notes.
  6. One location. In essence, I have just one folder, and it is Archive. The Inbox simply acts like some kind of waiting room where emails wait to be executed. I merely add labels to make me get organized more. If I ever need something, there's always the search option which has not failed me yet.
Coming to a clean Inbox is just perfect for me. It is easy to achieve, too! To top it off, you can be oh so productive! Perfect.

Friday Fitness & Health: What to Eat After Working Out
We're walking/jogging tomorrow early morning. The plan is to be up and about at around 4:30 A.M., and get it kicking by 4:45 A.M. Of course, that is if I ever get my body off the bed. I plan do it, really. Why? Simply because even us, mere mortals, need to get in shape. Sitting in front of a computer day-in and day-out is just lacking movement, IMHO.

Now, I've been down the road of an athlete. For a good number of years, I've played badminton and gone to many competitions in aims of getting the coveted gold medal. Those were the days when I was more mindful of the things that I put in my mouth. These days..not so much. Since I've descended into the realm of the non-moving geeks and worker ants, the question of what to eat before and most especially after working out arises.

When I hang out with my jogging buddies, the usual ending to the workout/exercise is a chow-down at a local eatery. Talk about putting everything lost back on. So, I was thinking, what does a non athlete eat after working out?

Here are some ideas as to what to healthily gobble up after an hour or so of sweating.

  • Consume 16-20 oz. of water after working out to aid your body in recovering the fluids lost when sweating away. Fact is, the body loses around a quart of fluid in an hour of exercise.
  • Dried fruits and nuts.
  • Fruit juice with cheese.
  • Yogurt with fruit.
  • Chocolate with milk.
  • Cereal with milk.
  • Eggs and toast.
  • Ham or chicken sandwich.
  • Pancakes and eggs.
  • Any regular meal that contains lean protein, starch, and vegetables.

That means, no more bacon, salami, hotdogs, eggs, rice, and everything nice. Okay, so there are some goodies though. The thing is, eating the right food at the right time after working out is an essential in helping you keep up your energy up, extend the fat-burning mode longer, and your workout performance higher.

Now, I already have an inkling as to what I'm going to have for breakfast after running around tomorrow. Cereals! Mmmm..

Enjoy your weekend everybody!

Girl Talk: Care For Naturally Curly Hair
Last week, I shared some tips on how to take care of straight hair. However, straight hair is not the only hairstyle on Earth. Women with curly hair encounter as much problems regarding their tresses as those with straight locks. So, as promised, I am now sharing some ways to care for naturally curly hair.

  • People with curly hair do not need to shampoo everyday. However, conditioning is important every time you shower. Choose shampoo and conditioner that leaves you feeling good, not the ones that make you feel like you haven't cleaned it at all.
  • Air dry or blow dry your hair. Choosing to completely blow dry your hair can cause frizz and you don't want that. So stop the drying before your hair is completely dry. Alternate it with air drying once or twice in a week.
  • Avoid the daily use of these: elastic bands, blow driers, flat irons, and chemicals.
  • Do not use a lot of products. Just use a small amount, rub your palms together to warm it up, then use evenly. Using a lot of products can weigh your hair down. You wouldn't want that. Products that contain alcohol should also be avoided as they dry your hair and often increase frizzies.
  • Brushes are the usual culprit of frizz. Use combs or better yet, use your fingers.

These are just a few basic things you can do to take care of curly hair. Follow them, and take good care of your tresses. If you care for them correctly, you will not have to trim your hair as often as others who use flat-irons, blow driers, or brushes because your split ends will be almost extinct.

Ready to flaunt those curls?

Girl Talk: Care for Straight Hair
Some women are born curly haired, some frizzy, some wavy, some with fine strands, while others have thicker ones. I was blessed with straight hair. And through the years, I never did take time to take care of my hair, and now, it is not as straight as it was before.

Straight hair is by nature, fine and thin. Those women on TV who show off their long locks that look so thick they could pass for a curtain have, in fact, lots of fine strands of hair.

Here are some basic care tips for straight locks:

  • To take care of straight hair, look for shampoos gentle enough for daily shampooing. If you want to use conditioning products, make sure they are light, such as sprays and NOT creams. And you have to make sure to wash them out well, because conditioners tend to become the ultimate death of fine hairs as they drag it down.
  • To create volume, use a mousse or gel on the roots of your hair. For better effect, go against the natural parting of your hair. Better yet, tip your head upside down while for a minute or two.
  • To create some bounce and body to straight hair, find thickening shampoos and make them your BFFs. These usually have panthenol, which makes each hair strand thicken.

While straight hair looks lovely, it can also be a bit lifeless. Unlike curly hairs, which will be discussed next Thursday. :)

Cheers!

How to Help a Marriage or Relationship Survive
It is a shame how so many marriages start so quickly, only to end as quick as it started. In the United States alone, dissolving a marriage or separation is as easy as 1, 2, and 3. While in the Philippines, it may not be as quick to annul or divorce your spouse, but it has become easy just to turn your back and leave.

Hey, I may not know these from personal experience, i.e., my marriage itself, but I have seen too many broken marriages that I wonder at my guts by still pushing through marriage when I should be traumatized by now. Even my childhood friend suffered the same fate. Got married 9 months into a relationship (no, bride was not pregnant), and in a year or so, marriage evolved into an on-and-off one, and now, after 2 years, SEPARATION.

The possibility of it happening to my marriage scares me a lot. As much as I try to brush these thoughts out of my mind, I must admit there have been many nights where I've lain awake trying to conjure up ways to make this precious relationship last. In my mind's eye, I have made a list of do's and don'ts but I still cannot be sure if this really works.

There is this other list though, which I found in Zen Habits. Leo's (of Zen Habits) ideas somewhat coincide with what I had in mind. His points in his Seven Deadly Sins of a Relationship are as follows, as well as my comments:

  1. Resentment - This one is something like a small dose of rat poison in your food. It kills your relationship little by little through the small resentments you have. If you do not let the small things go, little by little, it builds and one day it would just blow up without your partner knowing anything about it.
  2. Jealousy - Nothing is worse than letting jealousy eat you up inside. Although, admittedly it would be nice if your special someone was jealous once in a while. But do not take it to the next level by being too driven by it. It could definitely ruin a relationship.
  3. Unrealistic expectations - People are people. Despite what you think your special someone SHOULD be, do not expect too much. A little surprise never hurt anybody, and if you set your expectations too high from the person, you end up feeling let down, and you do not have anybody else to blame other than yourself.
  4. Not making time - This, I believe is one of the usual culprits of broken marriages. In the quest to provide for the family, a spouse, or both, could spend so much time doing other things to the extent that he or she no longer has the strength or time to spend on his or her own family. And to be honest, this is what I fear the most. Spending time with your whole family is different from spending one on one time with your significant other. Omit this one, and *poof!* next thing you know your boats are drifting apart.
  5. Lack of communication - Communication is a MUST in ALL forms of relationships. Everybody has misunderstandings and small fights, but if there is lack of communication, there is a lack of clarification or letting out of emotions which in turn could add to the brewing battle of wills.
  6. Not showing your gratitude - Even the simplest of things can make or break a relationship. Showing your gratitude by appreciating even the minute things done for you or the blessings that have come can definitely strengthen a relationship. Not showing your gratitude can often make your partner feel like his oer her efforts were nothing, or that you did not even notice the things done for you.
  7. Lack of affection - No duh! Lack of affection = lack of anything. While the song "all we need is love.." is not exactly true, a marriage/partnership/relationship MUST have some form of affection. Right? Or else!

Leo's post took the words right from my mouth. Of course, he would have more authority talking about what to do because he has gone through marriage twice! Me? Oh, I am just a n00b. But I hope to grow old with... YOU!

XOXO,

Good Night for Great Mornings: How to Get a Good Night's Rest

Everybody needs that perfect night's sleep. For years, I had mastered the art of going asleep at 3:00-4:00 a.m., staying up all night just chatting, blogging, playing Ragnarok Online or EARTH2025. Sometimes I just downloaded and downloaded songs, or sometimes I just browsed sites all over the web. I woke up at around 5:30-7:00 to get ready for school, and when I got back, it was back to the PC.

These days, I admit I am not as crazy as that. Keeping myself awake until 2:00 a.m. consistently is enough to drive me nuts. For a while, I could handle it, but burn-out was just around the corner. I would most definitely find myself half-past dead at work (work starts at 6:00 a.m.). So I have been trying to get myself to go to sleep with 12 a.m. the latest.

Nevertheless, going to sleep may not exactly be the problem. My main problems are the tossing, turning, frequent urination, sleeptalking, teeth grinding, or what's worse: sleepwalking. I know. I need my sleep to fully rest.

So I've found a couple of things that are said to be tips on how to get a good night's sleep. Here are just a few that I have uncovered all over the Internet. There are a lot of them, but I'll leave them up to you.

  • Have a schedule. Varying times of going to sleep can disrupt your sleep quality. The body pretty much runs on routine, therefore erratic sleeping schedules can confuse your "biological clock."
  • Watch what you eat before bedtime. Your stomach should have something inside it, but it should not be full to the seams. One should not sleep until 3 hours after dinner has passed.
  • Keep your bedroom dark. Exposure to light when everything is supposed to be dark can also disrupt your internal cycles.
  • Have a good mattress. Turn your mattress upside down every couple of months. Replace it after 5-7 years as soon as you feel the springs and other innards.
  • Exercise. If your job involves a sedentary lifestyle or lack of physical exertion, this may result a poor quality of sleep.
  • Visit your doctor. If you are concerned that you might have some sort of sleeping disorder, it is always best to check with the professionals.

Other tips include:

  • Wearing appropriate clothing that reflects the weather.
  • If you can't fall asleep within an hour or less, get up and do something. Do not stay in bed. Staying in bed for long hours and not going to sleep makes one associate your bed not with sleep.
  • Try lavender. It is said to be very soothing and the scent may help calm you down and succumb to sleep.
  • Do not nap for 15-20 minutes a day. It drives your sleep cycle crazy making it harder to sleep at night.

Hopefully, and I honestly pray, that these things will help me. If you have other tips and tricks to help some nut case like me get some good ol' sleeping time, please do not hesitate to leave your ideas behind. ;)

Sweet Dreams!

Stop Multitasking, Start Getting Things Done the Right Way
Multitasking: Good or Bad?

If there is one thing women are most noted for, I believe it would be the mastery of the art of multitasking. Multitasking somehow integrates itself into the lives of women making them super human beings in the process.

One great example of this comes from a story from a guy colleague of mine while we were on the topic of S.O.P. (s3x on phon3). He said that he saw something about a woman and a man doing S.O.P. After a closer look, it showed how the woman, while engaging in the said task, was also ironing clothes as well! A classic case of great woman multitasking.

Although admittedly, it is not just women who master multitasking. These days, everybody pretty much knows how to multitask. And they are pretty good, too! With the continuous development of technology and all the things in this world, there seems to be so many things that one can do in just a couple of minutes. For example, checking your emails while chatting, while browsing some social networking website, while doing research for something, while balancing a baby being on the lap while feeding him or her, and singing. What?? You don't think that's possible? Of course, I know this to be true. I am THAT person in question. And I think it is just wrong. That is why I am trying to change it.

Though it seems like a great way to get a lot of things done, at the end of the day, I feel like I have been dragged through every room of the house. That happens on most days. There are days, though, that I don't feel too tired. Perhaps my body has adjusted to the multitasking.

One thing at a time.

After all things considered, I realized that it is best to do just one thing at a time. That way, you can work your absolute best, and concentrate more on what is being done at hand. Scheduling the things that must be done is indeed a good idea. I am trying real hard to do this. Somehow, I find myself almost always short of time. And then these would be the moments where I wish I would be able to have 36 hours a day.

Doing things one at a time allows you to sort out your activities and plan them carefully. Something I need to do. It is most definitely going to be an uphill battle, but from the bottom of my heart, I think this is for the best. God knows, perhaps this is what I needed all alone.

Indeed, the great PoohBah knew a lot when he told me when I was a n00b that burn-out should be

Introducing GTD (Getting Things Done) by David Allen

Have you ever heard of GTD? I have. I've known about this for a year or so now, but I have never been able to put it into practice. I've read a lot about it, but procrastination is indeed a curse, and it has put my goal of learning this into the back seat. All the more that I need to learn it now.

So I renew my goal of learning GTD. I got the following from Wikipedia in hopes of sharing it with you, too. In case you're one dove-tailing person like moi. Read up about this more and let's see what happens. So anyway, here is the process of GTD, and a step towards organization (still under GTD).

Process

When processing a bucket, a strict workflow is followed:

* Start at the top.
* Deal with one item at a time.
* Never put anything back into 'in'.
* If an item requires action:

* Do it (if it takes less than two minutes), OR
* Delegate it, OR
* Defer it.

* If an item does not require action:

* File it for reference, OR
* Throw it away, OR
* Incubate it for possible action later.

If it takes under two minutes to do something, just do it immediately. The two-minute rule is a guideline, encompassing roughly the time it would take to defer the action formally.

Organize

Allen describes a suggested set of lists which can be used to keep track of items awaiting attention:

* Next actions — For every item requiring attention, decide what is the next action that can be physically taken on that item. For example, if the item is, "Write project report," the next action might be, "Email Fred for meeting minutes," or, "Call Mary to ask about report requirements." Though there may be many steps and actions required to complete the item, there will always be something that needs to be done first, and this step should be recorded in the next actions list. Preferably, these steps are organized by the context in which they can be done, such as "in the office," "by the phone," or "at the store."
* Projects — Every open loop in one's life or work which requires more than one physical action to achieve becomes a project. These projects are tracked and periodically reviewed to make sure that every project has a next action associated with it, and thus can be moved forward.
* Waiting for — When an action has been delegated to someone else, or when one is waiting for some external event before a project can be moved forward, this is tracked in the system and periodically checked to see if action is due, or a reminder needs to be sent.
* Someday/Maybe — Things to be done at some point, but not right now. Examples might be "learn Chinese," or, "take diving holiday."

So! Let's get this multitasking out of our system and embrace the Art of organizing and getting things done!!

Cheers!!!

Survival tips for the Summer

I love Summer! Summer, summer, summer! Back when I was in school, I thought summer was the best thing that could happen. Not much classes (during college), and NO SCHOOL at all (when I was in my younger years). Nowadays, sometimes I fail to notice summer passing by. Surprisingly, this time around. I noticed.

Two days ago, I learned that summer is indeed here the hard way. I went to my late aunt's burial and when I came home, I found a very ugly tan line marked by the sleeves of my shirt. Lesson learned. Cover up!

Summer is supposed to be hot, but this time around, it is just too hot. But I still love it. For a person, like me, who just loves going around even in this blistering heat, I have some tips for you.

For us to enjoy our summer fully, we need to be equipped! From clothing accessories, and to other stuff, I have tried to come up with a couple of things.

  • Sunscreen - Children should definitely have sunscreen on when going out. SPF should be at least 4.
  • Wide brimmed hat - Baseball caps are not so good at protecting yourself from the sun.
  • Sunglasses - Must have UV protection. If your sunglasses do not say anything about UV protection, do not use it or do not buy it.
  • Wear lightweight and loose clothing
  • Spray-on sunscreen for hair - This protects your hair from drying up under the sun.
  • Liquids - It is VERY important to hydrate yourself these days. The heat makes one perspire more, and in the end you could be dehydrate. So, drink up.
  • Medicated lip balm - Forget that you're a guy or gal. Taking care of your lips is as important as taking care of your skin.
These things are all elementary. I know I'm supposed to tell you to stay away from the heat of the sun. But sometimes it is just too fun to pass on. So it is best to be at least a bit safe, eh? If you can't stay away from the heat, then be protected at least.

Have fun in the sun, you guys! I hope to do so, too! :D

Cheers!!

Signs of Pregnancy: Are you Pregnant or NOT?

Over the short course of three years, I have managed to give birth to two beautiful (if I may say so myself) babies. At a relatively young age of 23, I am already a mother of a 2-year old girl and a 1-year old baby boy. And I am very much happy with both of them. Thank you very much!

However, in as much as I do love my babies, I really do not want a third bouncing baby. I mean, it is just too much for me to handle, I guess. I would like another baby.. but just not right now. You get my drift?

Honestly? I am not a whiz at determining if I am pregnant or not. Up until a couple of months ago. :) My paranoia at getting pregnant has taught me a lot to watch out for symptoms and signs that I think I might be getting good at it. Hahahaha..

Recent events got me researching all over the Internet and asking around as to how to tell if one is pregnant. What happened? Oh nothing really... Just a bunch of people asking me if I'm pregnant or not. Some say I must be pregnant because I lost weight, while some ask if I am because I gained weight. Some asked because I seem to be blooming, and some, well, some people just ask because it seems I keep spawning. LoL

I would like to share them with you, just in case. Here are ways to determine if you've got a bun in your oven. Not all of them may apply, but you are welcome to try ALL of them. It never hurts to try, you know.

  • hCG test - Nothing like a good test to get rid of all anxiety and get to the bottom of things. Although there are some versions of this test that just do not work. So it does not exactly work 100%, but then again, what does? I did not know I had my second baby because I took 3 hCG tests and 2 came out negative and 1 positive. I believed the Negative. Wahaha.. Yeah, I believe what I want to believe.
  • Frequent Urination - One sign that was a dead giveaway for me was the frequent urination. Especially in the middle of the night. Even at work, I wondered why I had to urinate every hour or so. Then again, that happened to me recently, too. But I realized I just drink a LOT of water these days. :D
  • Drowsiness - This one, for me, hits the mark. When I had my first baby, all I could think about was sleep. I just wanted to sleep, sleep, and sleep. And sleep I did! If there is no reason why you should be sleepy all the time then, CONGRATULATIONS!
  • Increased appetite and cravings - For some women, the increase of appetite simply means menstruation is just around the bend. However, I believe it is when the would-be-pregnant woman would crave for something that is often illogical to crave for, THAT is it! For example, when I was pregnant with my second baby, I would ask my husband to buy me banana cue at 12 a.m. :D OR like my aunt who would ask her husband to go to events and stuff and make sure he brought home the private part of a girl lechon for her to eat. If he couldn't bring it, then he better not come home at all. See!
  • Increase of weight / bloating - Well, there are many explanations for an increase of a woman's weight. Sometimes this is due to the menstruation, still. But if she continues to gain weight, then what else could it be?
  • Missed period - Of course! If you miss it, then there must be wrong. This should be warning enough for you, right? Then again, I've had times where I missed it for a couple of months, then it just comes back...! *whew!*
  • Quickening - This is defined as the movement of the baby inside the womb. This actually almost made me faint. When I felt my baby move, I was then pretty sure I had something. Worms wouldnt make much movement, right? What else could it be? Hyperacidity just does not kick that much.
  • Heartbeat in the womb - If there is a separate heartbeat inside of you, I believe you should have yourself checked. Because if that is not a baby, then you really should be worried.
  • Moodiness - Women tend to have PMS (Pre-menstrual Syndrome). However, in this case, the if the moodiness does not go away after a while, then, "Houston, we have a bun in the oven."
  • Unusually big midsection - Sometimes it comes out as a beer belly (yes, some women have beer bellies), and sometimes it is actually a baby. There are some cases, though, for some lucky women where the midsection does not grow as big as it is supposed to. These are the cases when one does not really know for sure.
  • Glowing - I am not saying that the woman glows like a glow-worm. All I'm saying is that a pregnant woman has this GLOW around her. I really can't explain it much. It just is.
  • Breast tenderness - The breast area often becomes tender and somewhat swollen when the woman is pregnant. I believe it is the hormones. A friend of mine asked me once about this, and I think that there is this fine line between the tenderness when the woman is about to have her monthly visitor, or the woman would not be in contact with that visitor for another 9 months or so.

I think I have listed a couple of signs already. I will try to update this as I go around and pick up more clues.

I do believe that children/babies are blessings from God. God would not give you something that He knows you cannot handle. That's why I keep my head up. I keep pushing and pushing because I know that I can do this. It is a shame to bring a child into this world, only to let it suffer. Be smart! ;) I know I'm trying. Hehehe..

How to Make Delicious Potato Salad

One of the things my friends swear by, is my grandmother's potato salad. They say it is absolutely, YUMMY! So, I will do the world a favor by sharing her version of this salad to you. It is not that hard, and you do not exactly have to follow everything by the book. There is no exact measuring and you can adjust everything to your preference. Isn't that nice? ;) You'll love it! Trust me. If not, well then, at least you tried. :D

I call it, "Lily's Potato Salad". Here it goes:

Ingredients:
  • 2 kilos potato
  • 2 tetra packs Mayo
  • 1 can pineapple chunks
  • 1 chicken breast
  • 2 apples (preferably Fuji apples)
  • pepper
  • sugar
  • salt
  • pickled relish
  • mustard
  • white onion (finely chopped)
  • chicken cubes

Instructions:

I.
  • Wash the chicken breast and put to boil. When boiling, but garlic, onion, chicken cubes, salt, vetsin (optional), and a dash of pepper.
  • Check if chicken breast is already soft or cooked.
  • Take the chicken out of the soup to cool. DO NOT THROW AWAY CHICKEN STOCK/BROTH.
  • Once chicken is cooled, shed chicken into small strips.
II.
  • Peel the potatoes
  • Depending on the size of the potatoes, chop until 1/4 of the size of a small potato.
  • Cook the potatoes in the chicken broth. [To test if potatoes are already cooked, push a toothpick into one. If it goes right in, then it is ready.]
  • Use a colander when removing the potatoes from the broth.
III.
  • Mix the chicken strips and potatoes, pineapple chunks [drained], and chopped apples [same size as the potatoes].
  • Season to taste using salt, pepper, mustard, pickle relish, mayo, etc.

Enjoy!
If you have questions or clarifications, please do not hesitate to ask.

[Edit: I forgot something, guys. Awfully sorry. I left out the pineapple chunks and the chopped apples.]

How To Outsmart Robbers

In this day and age, there is a need to refine the ancient art of street smarts. It is not because we have developed a sudden case of paranoia or some other psychotic trait. But merely a step towards precaution.

For the past few days, there has been an increase of instances where more and more people get robbed on their way to work. These robberies most likely happen to those who work in call centers and other jobs which require job shifts to start at such unholy hours. Since there is nothing that can be done to address the work schedules, it is a must to apply some precautions to help us from suffering the worst in robberies in these situations.

I have come up with some ideas that could make the most out of robberies and when travelling alone. Although these things may not suit you, but at least it would give you some ideas as to which best suits you.

  1. Wear comfortable footwear. When commuting, it is always best to wear comfortable shoes. This comes in handy when somebody has snatched your bag or purse. If you think you can do it, you can pursue the culprit better if you can run better. And you can also run for help easier, too! And if you managed to have a firm grip on your bag, the weight of your work-shoes should provide the additional *umph!* if you choose to hit him/her with it.
  2. Do not carry a lot of cash. When commuting, or simply going around town, I believe it is best to carry a small amount of cash. At least when somebody tries to grab your bag and gets away with it, you could always call people immediately and just cancel your cards.
  3. Hide your cash in your person. After an incident early this week of somebody getting robbed close to my house, my husband suggested that I do not put my money inside my bag. That way, when somebody robs you and asks for your bag, you can hand it over and still have your money safe. I dont know about you, but I have resorted to putting my bills in a small pouch and tucked inside my bra - just when I travel to work at 6 a.m.
  4. Leave your cards at home. Leaving your cards at home is a good thing, too. Not only does it help you save money from robbers, but it also helps you save money from your spending! Just bring enough money for your expenses and a little extra for emergencies. Nothing more, nothing less.
  5. Have somebody accompany you. There have been many instances of robberies right after payday. Some people have availed of salary loans and when this happens, the credit company keeps the ATM card and they withdraw all your funds for you. When you have your salary in hand, go home directly. Either that, or run straight to the bank and deposit it. Do not go around down with your moolah. Some robbers dont exactly care if you're a millionaire or if you just have a couple of hundreds. If they want it, they want it.
  6. Dress normal. Most of the time, anything that glitters catches a robber's attention. If you are not a bodyguard toting socialite, then perhaps you should try to be a fashionista without the UBER bling bling that yells "I'm bloody rich!!" because if you do, I bet you a hundred dollars that you will be eyed on and as quickly as you can say "Snap!" you're either at gun point, knife point, or simply dumbstruck that your earrings are gone without you noticing it.

These are only a couple of my ideas but I would be happy to hear any tricks up your sleeve. :)
